About the MacLellan clan.
MacLellan is a storied and respected Scottish surname of medieval origin, one of the most ancient in Southern Scotland, meaning "son of the servant of St. Fillan", or by another translation, "son of the friend of the wolf." Originally associated with the Border Revivers in Northern England, the MacLellans settled in Dumfries and Galloway in the 13th century where they reportedly captured Dumfries castle from "The Bruce" and founded the town of Balmaclellan. They built MacLellan Castle in Kirkcudbright in the 16th century, and at one point, there appear to have been no less than 14 knights of the clan in that region.

Like many Scots, the MacLellan clan's history is filled with stories of boldness and bravery. Of decisiveness, persistence and of unshakeable faith. They were warriors who stood for something, it's unusual today for a family to have a motto, let alone more than one, but the MacLellan clan has two. The clan's primary motto, represented in their coat of arms, "Think On" is at once an awesome story of fierceness and determination, and of refusing to take "no" when the right answer was "yes." It was the answer of Sir William MacLellan to King James II when he hesitated to fulfil his promise to restore clan lands, and it means "you'd better think again."

The second motto, "Superba Frango," latin for "bring down the proud" or "I break down proud things," embodies both the ethos of the clan and the elemental nature of the warrior. While the clan may not be famous like Wallace or the Bruce (although Sir John MacLellan did accompany Wallace to France after his defeat at Falkirk), the qualities that made them formidable and respected live on, and for good reason. Warriors who rise to the challenge, who stand for something ancient and timeless and good. Warriors not of wanton violence or self-serving ambition, but who, in the face of cultural pressure to bend their standards or reject their beliefs, have the courage to stand up and say, "Think on."
